How much does a robotic automation project actually cost?

It depends heavily on scope. Collaborative robot (cobot) cells for a single task typically run $40,000–$75,000 fully installed; a traditional industrial robot cell starts around $100,000, and heavy-payload or multi-robot lines can reach $200,000–$500,000+. Tooling and end-of-arm effectors typically add $5,000–$25,000, and installation/programming usually runs 20–50% of the robot's own cost.

XNCO's engineering is based in Mexico rather than the U.S., which meaningfully lowers our labor cost basis compared to integrators who quote from purely U.S.-based engineering teams — that savings gets reflected in the quote, not absorbed as extra margin.

How fast does automation pay for itself?

Across the industry, most industrial automation projects pay back in 12–24 months. Cobot deployments tend to be faster — often 6–12 months — because of their lower upfront cost, and some single-task replacements (like machine tending or palletizing one bottleneck station) have paid back in under a year. Is it safe to have robots working near our employees?

Yes, when the cell is designed to the current standard. Industrial robot safety in the U.S. is governed by ANSI/A3 R15.06-2025 (harmonized with the newly updated ISO 10218-1:2025 and ISO 10218-2:2025), which covers the robot itself, how it's integrated into your cell, and how your team operates it day to day. Collaborative applications — robots working directly alongside people without a cage — are explicitly addressed in the current standard and are something we design for regularly, not an exception we work around.

Will this eliminate jobs on our floor?

In our experience, most projects shift people rather than remove them — operators move from repetitive, injury-prone tasks (like manual case packing or repetitive lifting) into machine tending, quality checks, and oversight roles. Several of the plants we've worked with brought their injury reports on the automated line down to zero while keeping headcount on that line. We're glad to walk through what the transition looks like for your specific roles before you commit to anything.

Can you retrofit our existing line, or does it have to be a new build?

Retrofit is usually the more common project, not the exception. We design around your existing floor plan, conveyor lines, and process constraints rather than asking you to rebuild around a robot. A full new-line build is only the right call when the existing line's layout or throughput ceiling genuinely can't support the upgrade.

What's the difference between a cobot and a traditional industrial robot?

A cobot (collaborative robot) is designed and rated to work directly alongside people without a safety cage, typically at lower payloads and speeds, and generally costs less up front ($10,000–$75,000+ depending on configuration). A traditional industrial robot is typically faster and handles heavier payloads, but usually requires guarding or a safety-rated cell, and starts around $100,000. Which one fits depends on your cycle time, payload, and floor space — not a fixed rule, which is why this is one of the first things we assess on a site visit.

What happens after installation — who supports the system when something breaks?

Every project includes a field-service option (Bronze/Silver/Gold tiers) covering scheduled maintenance and breakdown response, and it's the first recurring relationship most of our clients keep with us after commissioning. We also build every cell with remote monitoring in mind, so a lot of issues get caught and diagnosed before they become a full line-down event.

Do you only work with automotive manufacturers?

No — automotive is one of five industries we actively serve, alongside food & beverage, warehousing/fulfillment, semiconductor and electronics, and heavy industry/petrochemical. The underlying automation problem (repetitive handling, packaging, or precision assembly at a bottleneck station) tends to look similar across all of them, even though the products themselves are completely different.
